Collapsible Chat Messages

When viewing a chat, it is often useful to go back to a particular point and edit a message to try and correct a chat that has gone awry. However, with long and repetitive LLM messages it can be hard to find the user messages.

It would be useful to be able to collapse messages into “Chatbot” and “User” accordion items. The goal being that you could perform ‘Collapse All’ and ‘Expand All’ operations on the whole message thread, to more easily step back to an earlier point in the conversation.

Came here to request the same feature. It would be very useful.

For me it would be a nice idea, at least, to be able to collapse AI responses when dealing with large ones.

Or having a way to navigate between user messages and AI responses quickly in the same chat/thread.

    Merged request

Foldable chat/markdown (outline view, fold levels)

For managing chats with longer context, a way to fold elements might mitigate excessive scrolling or searching. Keyboard shortcuts for folding (either hierarchical or flat) or for navigating between markdown and text, or getting to the desired section.

    e.g.:

    • view only code blocks when several short code snippets are generated

    • view only chat around folded code blocks (maybe ~1-3 lines showing)

    • some mix of both views

I don’t know that this is the ideal solution, though I still find bouncing between vscode with beta copilot and t3chat/gemini/chatgpt when dealing with 200+ lines of code.

    Negative or positive feedback welcome.

I came here to make this request. I need it. Chats get way too long, responses are long. Finding the answer to a previously asked question is impossible with the amount of scrolling I need to do to find it. At minimum, I need like a timeline on the side that as I scroll will show me the relative scroll distance to the next question, so I don’t over scroll and pass one. And at a glance, see roughly how many questions I’ve asked. The scroll timeline thing will become more dense overtime as I continue in the same chat conversation.

I like this! There is a need for chat navigation changes that provide both a visible (icon) and hot key methods to:

    • Collapse/expand prompts and responses

    • Jump to next/previous user prompt

    • Pin important points so you can get back to them quickly (e.g. for experimenting via branches)

I also think for code blocks this would be especially useful. I sometimes need to paste file or two worth of code in the message, and i would like to collapse them so its easier to navigate.
