Free models trigger various restrictions and warnings of paid models
A few issues I've noticed with free models (like Owl Alpha at the time of writing this):
Limits exhausted → cannot edit messages, have to branch off
Limits exhausted → cannot regenerate responses using the button on a user message, have to branch off or use the button on a response message
Free models show “Large message context may be expensive” warnings, both as a callout block and as a warning icon in the chat input

Good callout, will add a special case for that

Not really, it's not visible in the chat history.
The issue isn't an error message appearing instead of the response, it's a popup (if that's what they're called) appearing in the corner that the limits are exhausted when you click “Retry same” or choose a model from the floating model selector dropdown. It's a bit different with editing, you can edit your messages but you cannot submit the edited version of your message — the submit button is disabled (with no tooltip iirc).
Branching off works fine though.

I don’t need there to be something visible in the history, I want to check the logs for the thread to see structurally what leads to that scenario

The large message warning is correct (“may be expensive”) , but agreed on a free model it should probably be filtered
