When you click the āxā it is queued to delete when you submit. This is to prevent deleting accidentally. The icon is to indicate that it will be deleted.

I can see the intention. I also see that the message the pops up indicates this, but some more UI feedback would improve UX. Maybe move it to the front/end of the list and don't blur the content behind. The blur in particular is a common pattern for temporary poop overs, lending the indication that you're waiting for confirmation rather than declaring action has been taken.
